Aldi have the hip kids in their crosshairs with this Godello from Monterrei in northern Spain, just above Portugal. “This is with-it white as cutting edge as a samurai sword massively in vogue effortlessly cool,” boasts the blurb on the back on bold capitals. Yeah turn the volume down, we get it. But can a wine be hip?
Aldi also now has a wine made from the Godello grape in the Atlantic north west (look out for the eye-catching bottle), but an authentic Albariño at this price is worth grabbing. Sweet citrus fruit, supple texture and a crisp white pepper and lemon peel finish.
If albariño from the region of Rías Baixas has so far led the way in Galicia, there are many other vivacious wines from the Atlantic-cooled corner of north-western Spain.

UK supermarkets are embracing Godello in the same way they have with Albarino, so you can find good value examples under £10 (the best value was at Aldi who sold the very good Wine Foundry Godello, but is currently out of stock) – but to taste real Godello with its rich minerality you need to pay £12+ .
